Merce is the first kombi I have ever owned. We found one another quite by chance, with a bit of magic thrown in, a boy called woody stepped in to match us up. I hope to have her for ever, my boys have their eyes firmly on her. Some time before I will let them behind the wheel...

...one summer 1997 morning in PuertoEscondido... I assisted a non-starting green Combi, 1973 vintage, 1.700 cc, 7 place with an automatic gearbox. After three days of gas tank cleaning, carbs cleaning & sincro, fuel pump overhaul & batery charge, she started...on three cilinders! (yes: old Nr. Three was not functional) She then disapeared into wilderness with three italian youths on board, who had very little cash... Three days later, italian youths had to fly back home. They decided the Combi's new victim was ME: with a unanimous vote! Believing in democracy, I gratiously ablydged...

Looking for a panel beater

Member Since August 2008

Well its time again to get her fixed..especially since a bloke with a ute tray back revesed in2 us on our way back from Cairns...I'm looking at getting her small rust spots, dints etc repaired and then resprayed, however, I am wondering if anyone had some one they could recommend and that doesn't cost the earth. Also, I be interested in getting the camper conversing rebuilt as the old chipboard has seen the better days, any suggestion??? Thanks 71sunliner

the Big O!

Member Since March 2008

The Big O spent time in the arctic, then was shipped to Tasmania where he worked for a top bloke named Eddie. After many years of faithfull service Eddie couldn't let him go to be crushed so he put him out to pasture. THEN Eddie saw my post on KC and said if i was foolish enough to come get him i could have him for a nominal fee.... i was foolish enough and now in Frankston Vic, i have my forever dream car the last of the lowlights, 72 DC Kombi.... i've since found a set of gates and rear bench seat/tool box, He's looking more like his old self every day.....

I'm Paul (Vanders) and I live in sunny Launceston, Tasmania with my family. Betty Blue is my second Kombi. She is a 78 Microbus Deluxe and is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I also have a couple of other kombis awaiting restoration (Bullet, Big Bird and Bargain). With 3 kids I one day hope that each will have their own kombi.

Fritz's Profile

Fritz

Member Since July 2007

My name is Fritz, I am a 1974 Kombi.

I was once owned by a man in Penrith. He had to let me go because of family commitments. He said, "It's not you man, it's me. I made the decision to get married. I made the decision to have kids. And now I have to make the decision to let my last slippery grasp of freedom go. I love you man."

Brenton from Newcastle then took me into his life. We'd hang out together with his mates, go camping, and just muck around together all the time. We became great mates. Brenton moved down to Melbourne and I started to feel a bit self-conscious amongst all the flash new and streamlined cars - I had some real self-esteem problems and developed anorexia automobilia. Brenton knew it was time for me to move on.

Stella & Paul from Cairns said they'd love to bring me up to their place - it's about as far away as you can get from the snooty BMWs of Melbourne. Their mates Kazu, Reade & Michael met me & Kazu organised mechanical repairs.

Nowadays I live in the tropics - I scoot around the Cairns region doing mundane things like taking Paul & Stella to work and more interesting things like whizzing up to Port Douglas for lunch or gamboling around the tablelands looking at stuff. It's not a bad life for a Kombi, I guess... but I'm pretty keen to do some more long trips when I can get the boofheads who are my Pilot & Navigator organised.

Anyone interested in an occasional Cairns Cruising Kombi Convoy?

Um,.......live a busy lifestyle, and thought that owning a Kombi would be a perfect opportunity to just pack it up and 'leave' socitey for a couple of days. The dogs have sorted themselves out and have their own place to sit whist on the road. After a bumpy start, have slowly started doing little things to make it our own. Previously, we couldn't understand why everyone was so Kombi Krazy. Until you get one for yourself, only then, can truly understand. Named her Mrs Peel, after the character from the 60's cult TV Show- The Avengers, both Retro and nothing but class!!

I got my Kombi, a '76 2L EFI Auto Sunliner Camper, as my first car at the end of November last year. Since then I've got her on the road, and done little bits here and there but nothing major. I love driving my Kombi, and get to everyday as my daily driver :)
